  • Seventeen Years: The Happy Anniversary Dark Star Orchestra® Haiku

Let's think for a minute about the number 17.  It's one more than the "sweet" of 16 and one less than the 18 of "life." So what's left for sorry old 17 besides its rep in the world of teen magazines?  It just so happens, 17 is the number of syllables in the Haiku so I wrote one to mark this occasion and would like you to do the same.  Here it goes: Grateful Dead, Band Not But Keep Truckin' Anyway Hell of a Ride, Man, Damn

  • Sing Me Back Home for I'm Forever Grateful - Happy (early) Birthday, Jerry

Another year, another celebration - 72 years of Jerome John Garcia's voice leaving the fabric of the universe pierced with everlasting beauty. I was tuned into the Daily Dose of Dead on WNTI and the gorgeous Sing Me Back Home from the So Many Roads compilation made me wonder what life would have been like had Jerry had not exchanged his 15th birthday present for an electric guitar and kept the accordian..... Forever Grateful.

  • New Tour, New Season, New Merch, Old Friends

Here in Ohio (a.k.a. Land of the Dark Star Jubilee (get your tickets!)), it's kind of muggy and the hardware store is already sold out of air conditioners but no complaints!  Spring Tour East is ON DECK, célébrations printemps (pardon my French!) are underway, and we have lots to celebrate.  Tour opens strong - Jersey Strong - in Montclair then two nights at the Cap over the weekend, everything warming up to the Jubilee and beyond.   Super mad props from the shopdso crew to the road crew (as always, but), tour manager extraordinaire Matt Reynolds has been busy in his...

  • Spring, So Glad You Made It

Now gimme gimme some lovin'!  Happy Vernal Equinox everyone!  We're still home before our official Spring Tours start out West at the Boulder Theater on the 28th, but Spring is in the air even here in the upper Midwest!  We all know that s-word is more than likely to greet us here and there, but we've got our Long-Sleeve T's, Hats and Hoodies to keep us going before it's Tank Top Time.  Springtime for us also means the Jubilee is almost upon us and we're stoked as always.  Bygone Jubilee goods are still available here if you're feeling extra festive,...

  • North > South and All Points In Between - Winter Tour 2014

We love love love this tour.  Well, we love all of our tours, but this one is so beautifully routed starting in the Northern Middle West, covering many of our hometowns including our band's Sweet Home, Chicago, and working Southbound shedding the cold from there.  Wrapping up most recent tours with a zig-zagging Florida swing, we've found an optimal travel destination from Florida in Jamaica and are looking most forward to capping the tour there for the second year.  Providing you all new scenes and adventures in which to enjoy the music that rocks our souls is our main motivating...

  • Happy New Year, Everyone!

Shopdso.net hopes you had a happy and safe 2013 and wish you all the best for the coming year.  While Vern McLellan said, “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year,”  we know the cosmic cares not what our calendar says as all days are this way.  Thank you fans, dancers, travellers, joyous revellers on ALL occasions the music is played for bringing us your good energy and making is possible for us to do what we do.  Be sure to keep in touch this year and beyond so we...

  • Happy Anniversary, Dark Star Orchestra!

Sixteen years.  Sixteen full years of honoring a musical tradition that continues to surprise and inspire. For those keeping track, that's 2258 shows.  I could spend the rest of the evening waxing sentimental all strands of Dark Star Orchestra fabric but I'll spare it.  I will however offer great thanks to all who have made this music a passion of life-devotion because anyone who has worked what averages out to be 141.125 shows PER YEAR for at least one year knows without love, it is possible, but souless - something we all know not to be the case.  So thanks...

  • Gearing Up for Fall.... Dark Star Orchestra Tour

I don't know about you, but it seemed here at headquarters like summer was never going to arrive. Ordering hoodies going into Memorial Day's Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio instead of tank tops felt super wrong, but those who arrived optimistic against 40-degree nights were indeed glad we went that direction.  Summer finally broke out in full force as if it had been there all along and we were ready with tanks (at least for the ladies), but as fast as that happened, Fall Tour is upon us.  The band starts out at BEAUTIFUL Jackson Hole, Wyoming and I'm willing...

  • On the 71st Anniversary of Jerry's Birth

It seems as though everything there is to say about Jerry has been said, every touching lyric presented as evidence of soulful magnitude and yet we're still nowhere close to expressing our true appreciation. However, I am proud to be one of the lucky ones to whom his music spoke and be as a result, privileged to connect with everyone whom without him, would harbor incomplete souls. The DNA of his music, universal remains.  Thank you, Jerry.
